This is a very nice corrugated/deep groove face mashie niblick by C.C. Chattell of Chicago. Chattell and Charles J. Klees opened a pro shop in Chicago across the street from Jackson Park in 1910 and built custom golf clubs. This particular head is a G. Nicoll hand forged head as indicated by the Hand cleek mark. Klees bought out Chattell in 1915 and began to use his name on the golf clubs he built. This club was built by Chattell sometime in the 1910-1915 time frame. The deep groove clubs were ruled illegal for tournament play in 1921. The club head is in extremely nice condition. The 36” hickory shaft appears to be the original. It fits tight to the head and is extremely straight. The grip appears to be original and shows very nicely. The swing weight is C6 for those that like to play the old hickory clubs. As a side note, the Klees family owned and operated this pro shop until 2019 making it the oldest Off-course pro shop in the United States.
